Believe it! Chicago Cubs win 2016 World Series

first_img Do you see a typo or an error? Let us know. Believe it! Chicago Cubs win 2016 World Series (CNN) — The billy goat curse is dead. The Chicago Cubs are World Series champions at long last, winning their first Fall Classic in 108 years, defeating the Cleveland Indians in 10 innings 8-7 in Game 7 at Progressive Field in Cleveland.Ben Zobrist’s RBI double off Bryan Shaw drove in pinch runner Albert Almora, Jr., and Miguel Montero’s single with the bases loaded brought home Anthony Rizzo for what proved the winning run.The Cubs hadn’t won a World Series since 1908, which was the longest drought in baseball. They also broke the curse set the last time they got this far 71 years ago.On October 6, 1945, a month after the end of World War II, a Chicago tavern owner named William “Billy” Sianis went to Wrigley Field, intending to attend Game 4 of the World Series with his pet goat, Murphy. But, according to the Billy Goat Tavern website, while both had tickets, the goat was denied entry. No animals were allowed in the ballpark, plus Murphy smelled bad.Sianis, according to legend, threw up his arms and proclaimed, “The Cubs ain’t gonna win no more. The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field.”They had not won since. Until now.The Cubs are the first team to come behind from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series since the Kansas City Royals did it in 1985. Chicago also accomplished that feat by winning the final two games on the road. The last team to do that was the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates. With the Cubs’ win Thursday, the Indians now have the current longest dry spell between championships, last winning in 1948. Africa CDC warns continent to prepare for rise in number of…

first_imgAfrica’s COVID-19 cases rise to 88,172: Africa CDC Africa CDC: Africa’s COVID-19 cases surpass 84,634 A picture of the map of Africa showing the countries that have confirmed cases of COVID-19./Africa CDC The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said Africa must be careful and prepare for a rise in the number of cases after easing of lockdowns. The urgent call was made by John Nkengasong, Director of Africa CDC, as he noted that “the onset of COVID-19 pandemic was delayed in Africa but the number of cases and deaths is increasing rapidly every day.”According to the latest figures from the Africa CDC, Africa’s confirmed COVID-19 positive cases reached 337,315 as of Friday morning as the death toll from the pandemic also rose to 8,863.The Africa CDC said that some 161,254 people who were infected with COVID-19 had recovered across the continent so far.“Africa must be careful and prepare for a rise in the number of cases, as already observed in Latin America after easing of lockdowns,” an Africa CDC statement, issued on Friday, quoted Nkengasong as saying. The Africa CDC Director also stressed that the availability of a vaccine is “the only solution that would allow African Union member states to return to a fully functional economy.”Nkengasong further highlighted two strategies for vaccine development and access, which he said are securing sufficient vaccine supplies and removing barriers to vaccine rollout.According to Nkengasong, the two strategies would require mobilizing financial capital to purchase enough vaccines, ensuring appropriate distribution, and manufacturing, including, enabling technology transfer to rapidly scale-up local manufacturing capacity on the continent. The Africa CDC also said that the Southern Africa region is now the most affected area across the continent in terms of positive COVID-19 cases, overtaking the Northern Africa regionRelatedcenter_img Africa’s COVID-19 cases top 336,000: Africa CDClast_img read more

Irkut MC-21 300, Burung Besi Asli Rusia yang Siap Goyang Pasar Narrow Body Airbus…

first_imgIrkut MC-21 300. Jazz look for improvement at point guard position with Exum returning

first_imgIt goes without saying that we very much look forward to Dante returning to health. – Dennis LindseySALT LAKE CITY — For the last couple years, the biggest weakness for the Utah Jazz has been at the point guard position. It’s not surprising, considering that in the majority of the games, the starting point guard was a rookie — Dante Exum for 41 games in 2014-15 and Raul Neto for 53 games last season. Trey Burke and Shelvin Mack have gotten the rest of the starts and succeeded at varying levels. All four point guards are under contract for next season, but there’s little chance all four will return. The odd man out would seem to be Burke, the former lottery pick, who was relegated to the end of the bench over the final quarter of the season after Mack was acquired in a trade from Atlanta. Burke, a starter for a season-and-a-half, didn’t even get into 15 of the last 24 games. The Jazz are hoping that Exum, who tore the ACL in his left knee last August in an international exhibition game, will be back to full strength at the start of the 2016-17 season. The 6-foot-6 guard has rehabbed all season and has been cleared for contact in June.“It goes without saying that we very much look forward to Dante returning to health,’’ said Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey. “He’s quite anxious as are we to move forward from this past season.”Even though the point guard position was the lowest-ranked on the team in terms of player efficiency ratings, Lindsey was pleased with the overall improvement by each of the point guards.“Our point guards, all three of them improved this year,” said Lindsey. “We have four under contract, which provides a unique opportunity from a development standpoint and a continuity standpoint as well.”Neto was handed the starting spot, perhaps when he wasn’t quite ready, out of necessity with Exum’s injury and because the Jazz preferred to have Burke’s scoring punch off the bench. Coach Quin Snyder backed his decision, pointing out that Neto was the leading 3-point shooter among all rookies last year (39.5 percent) and that he was more confident in Neto as a defender than Burke. Then when the trade was made for Mack in late February, the Jazz immediately moved him into the starting lineup with Neto as his replacement off the bench.Mack put up point guard numbers that hadn’t been seen in Utah since the days of Deron Williams as he averaged 12.7 points, 5.3 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game with a couple of near triple-doubles.“I took advantage of my opportunity when I got traded here and continued to work at it,” Mack said. “I feel I fit in real good and can play multiple positions.”Neto said he didn’t know before the season how much he’d play and even wondered if he might play some in the D-League.“I just came here ready to practice and get better,” he said. “I learned a lot every game, how fast the game goes. The physicality is way more than in Spain or Brazil. It was a great season for me.”Neto ended up playing in 81 games and averaging 5.9 points and 2.1 assists per game, while shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 74.3 percent from the free-throw line.Burke showed improvement this past season, even though his minutes diminished. He started off strong, shooting 43.5 percent from the field through December, well above the shooting percentages of his first two seasons (38.0 and 36.8 percent). His numbers, however, started to drop even before his minutes were cut and he shot just 40.8 percent in January and 32.2 percent in February.“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Burke said at the postseason press conference. “If I’m here, great, if I’m somewhere else, it’s been great.”Lindsey called Burke “the utmost professional” and added “I’m really proud of the way he’s handled the situation to date. This process has allowed him to move forward and we’ll see if that’s here or somewhere else.”As for Exum, it’s basically a waiting game. All he was able to do for the past eight months was strength training and shooting. He hopes the latter will improve on his rookie shooting numbers (34.9 percent overall, 31.4 percent from 3-point range).Exum said he won’t participate in the Jazz Summer League in July and isn’t sure if he’ll compete for Australia in the Olympic Games in August.“It’s been a long process and I want to be back as best as possible,” he said. “I’ve felt good for awhile and I’m ready to take the next step.”last_img read more
