Let’s Do the Math Again

first_img Richard SternbergSenior Fellow, Center for Science and CultureRichard Sternberg is an evolutionary biologist with interests in the relation between genes and morphological homologies, and the nature of genomic “information.” He holds two Ph.D.’s: one in Biology (Molecular Evolution) from Florida International University and another in Systems Science (Theoretical Biology) from Binghamton University. From 2001-2007, he served as a staff scientist at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, and from 2001-2007 was a Research Associate at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Dr. Sternberg is presently a research scientist at the Biologic Institute, supported by a research fellowship from the Center for Science and Culture at Discovery Institute. He is also a Research Collaborator at the National Museum of Natural History.Follow RickProfileWebsite Share “A Summary of the Evidence for Intelligent Design”: The Study Guide Congratulations to Science Magazine for an Honest Portrayal of Darwin’s Descent of Man Life Sciences Let’s Do the Math AgainRichard SternbergJune 3, 2010, 4:53 PM This is just a rough estimate, of course. And as I wrote in my original critique of Matheson, even if I’m off by a factor of two we are still left with far more functional introns than Matheson acknowledges. This compels me to ask Steve Matheson: How exactly did you come up with your estimates? And what about you, Larry Moran? What sort of arithmetic are you using? TagsJunk DNAScience,Trending Requesting a (Partial) Retraction from Darrel Falk and BioLogos Email Print Google+ Linkedin Twitter Share Jane Goodall Meets the God Hypothesis Earlier today I criticized Calvin College biologist Steve Matheson’s incorrect view of “junk” DNA. Matheson had argued in February that the human genome contains about 190,000 introns (stretches of non-protein-coding DNA that interrupt protein-coding genes), of which “only a handful” had important functional roles. “How many? Oh, probably a dozen,” he wrote, “but let’s be really generous. Let’s say that a hundred introns in the human genome are known to have ‘important functional roles.’ Oh fine, let’s make it a thousand.”On the contrary, I pointed out that at least 90% of genes are alternatively spliced, meaning that 0.9 x 190,000 = 171,000 introns are involved in alternative splicing, an essential process that helps to ensure that the proper proteins are made at the correct developmental stage and in the appropriate cells and tissues.Along comes University of Toronto biochemist Larry Moran, an outspoken Darwinist who hates the Center for Science and Culture so much he would probably heap abuse on us for saying that the Earth goes around the Sun. Sure enough, Moran wasted no time jumping on me for being an “Intelligent Design Creationist.” He posted the relevant portion of my critique and concluded: “It’s up to you, dear readers, to figure out all the things wrong with this explanation. You can start with the math. Arithmetic isn’t one of their strong points.”So let’s do the math. Again. I will make the task easy for everyone–even Moran and Matheson: Recommended Origin of Life: Brian Miller Distills a Debate Between Dave Farina and James Tour A Physician Describes How Behe Changed His MindLife’s Origin — A “Mystery” Made AccessibleCodes Are Not Products of PhysicsIxnay on the Ambriancay PlosionexhayDesign Triangulation: My Thanksgiving Gift to All Step 1. There are ~25,000 protein-coding genes in the human genome.Step 2. There are 190,000 introns/25,000 protein-coding genes = 7.6 introns/gene on average.Step 3. Ninety percent (possibly more) of gene transcripts undergo alternative splicing. Hence, 0.9 x 25,000 = 22,500 genes (actually, their RNAs) undergo alternative splicing. Therefore, 22,500 genes x 7.6 introns/gene = 171,000 introns involved in alternative splicing. TDF2015 Tech: Lampre Merida’s Warp TT & Tinkoff Saxo’s Specialized Tarmac & Shiv

first_imgAbsent from Tinkoff Saxo’s pits were the new Venge ViAS, instead relying on the Tarmac and Shiv for the stages we saw in person, but they do use the Roubaix and standard Venge when the course dictates.Specialized managed to keep them rolling on house-brand wheels and tires (mostly), but the cranks and cockpit were supplied by FSA and saddles by Prologo. Drivetrains were all Shimano Dura-Ace Di2… Mounts for SRM cycling computers were fitted to K-Force and SL-K bars and stems. For most days, the team was on Roval CLX40 tubulars with Specialized Allround 2 tubular tires.Contador gave his a last minute pressure check before rolling out for Stage Two. His water bottles were marked with A.C. on the top, as were the other team riders’, making it quick and easy to get the right drink to the right person during the race.Since Specialized doesn’t make a full disc wheel, the Shiv TT bikes were fitted with Vision disc rear and tri-spoke front carbon tubulars.Note the small bronze colored magnet stuck to the disc to trip the speed sensor on the chainstay.Glued to the TT wheels were a Specialized Time Trial 2 28x24mm tire. It’s not listed on their website, but it’s not the first time Specialized has made prototype TT tires for their athletes. They’ve even done it in clincher form, too. We’ve reached out to the brand to see if it’s something new or just a one-off and will report back as we get info.UPDATE: Just heard back from Specialized, here’s what they had to say about the tires:Etixx-Quickstep and Tinkoff-Saxo are our two biggest places to develop tires. Athletes like Tony Martin and Zedenek Stybar have been critical to understanding the characteristics that athletes are looking for in all conditions. If the guys are running a tire that is not listed in the current offerings it will be shortly… although, we are constantly working on tire compound with them even it the tire’s hot patch doesn’t show the change. They, too, hid the Di2 box under the saddle, shielding it from the wind. This one shows what the GPS tracker looks like installed, check here to see the mounting bracket without it.TEAM LAMPRE MERIDAWe didn’t get a chance to shoot the road bikes, only the Merida Warp TT sleds for Stage One, but they did give us a peek at one aftermarket upgrade. The bikes were outfitted with Fulcrum Racing’s Speed Disc and XLR-80 front wheels with Continental tires, FSA Vision bar and extensions, Prologo saddle and Rotor Q-Rings with Flow crankarms.Shifting was handled by Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 with a Berner carbon fiber cage and oversized lower pulley fitted to it. They use 13t and 15t wheels to save about 6g of drag, but they do add a bit more weight compared to a stock rear mech. Check them out in more detail here.last_img read more
