Lady Dragons hold on for 5-4 sectional tournament win over Fairfield

first_img By Mark Carpenter-It may have only been their fourth win of the season, but the improvement from the beginning of the season until now is quite evident for Coach Kevin Hunter and his West Union Lady Dragons girls soccer squad. On Saturday, Oct. 12 the Lady Dragons played host to a fellow member of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference, the Fairfield Lady Lions in a first round Southeast District Division III sectional tournament match up.In their regular season meeting, the Lady Lions pulled off an 11-6 victory, but Saturday’s tournament contest played out quite differently. The Lady Dragons, behind some offensive heroics from Mackenzie Silvia, raced to a 4-1 halftime advantage and then withstood a late Fairfield rally that went right down to the final shot of the game before escaping with a 5-4 victory over the visiting Lady Lions. The scoring started early for West Union, as less than a minute into the game after a nice save on the defensive end by keeper Jaisyra White, Silvia, known as “Wheels” to her coaches and teammates, scored her first goal of the day just 39 seconds in and then six minutes later repeated the performance from nearly the same spot on the field to give the Lady Dragons a 2-0 lead.At the 23:49 mark of the first half, West Union extended the lead to three goals with a little help from their opponent. After a scramble in front of the West Union goal, the ball was accidentally kicked into the net by a Fairfield defender, making it 3-0 in favor of the home team. With 14:06 to play in the first half, the Lady Lions finally got on the board when they perfectly executed a header into the net off a corner kick to cut their deficit to 3-1, but six minutes later the Lady Dragons lit the scoreboard again. With 8:53 until intermission, Fairfield was called for a foul in the box and Silvia made it a first half hat trick when she blasted the ensuing penalty kick over the Lady Lions’ keeper and into the top of the net and the home team went to halftime with a 4-1 advantage in their pocket. The game became a defensive struggle through the first third of the second half with the best scoring opportunity coming on a breakaway by West Union’s Alexis Mason that was stopped by the Fairfield keeper. With 26:34 left in the game, Silvia made it the hat trick plus one when she fired a shot from the right side that glanced off the keeper’s hands, straight up in the air, and then right back down into the net to make it 5-1 West Union. That was the final score of the game for the home team as they spent the final 15 minutes holding off a fierce Fairfield rally that began at the 14:42 mark. White came out of the goal to challenge an onrushing Lady Lion, only to see the ball slip away and Fairfield boot it into the open net to make it. The Lady Lions then got a pair of goals in the final six minutes, both coming off penalty kicks after the Lady Dragons were called for infractions in the box. That made it 5-4 and set up a very intense final two minutes of action. With 20 seconds to go, a shot by the Lady Lions went just wide of the net and then on the final play of the game, White made a leaping save and just by inches landed outside the goal line to preserve the fourth win of the season for West Union.“That last half was crazy,” said Coach Hunter. “I didn’t think we were getting tired but I think they put a lot more offensive pressure on us. Obviously, ‘Wheels’ getting that goal early and then continuing to score was huge for us.”“Jaisyra does a great job for us in goal and she is only a junior so she will be back.”The now 4-11-2 Lady Dragons moved into the sectional semi-finals where they traveled to North Adams on Monday, Oct. 14 for a sectional semi-final contest with the number one seeded Lady Devils. (The result of that match up was not available at press time.)“Our girls are just glad to be playing another game,” said Hunter. “When you are trying to build a program, a tournament win is always a good thing.”West Union’s Casey Biggs, left, battles for a possession during the Lady Dragons’ sectional tournament win over Fairfield on Oct. 12.
